Search for a Kitten

authorAvah | November 24, 2008

I’m on the search for a kitten for my new apartment (is it still a new apartment after 3 months?).

I may have acquired one.  A beautiful 8 month old orange Maine Coon kitten.  Of course I say kitten because he’s only 8 months old.  But he’s actually quite big.  He’s about the size of my roommate’s full grown cat.  Which means he’s going to be huge as he gets bigger.  And Maine Coon’s don’t fully mature until about 4-5 years.

My parent’s adopted him this weekend and took him home.  Mostly because I was just waiting to hear back on some other applications I had put in, but that didn’t work out.  One kitty, another beautiful orange and white Maine Coon wouldn’t have been a good match- he plays a little too rough with other cats.  And an itty bitty kitten I liked was adopted.  (Itty bitty kittens never last too long).

I like the orange kitty we got.  And he’s mostly what I want- big, fluffy, and a tabby.  I just really want a friendly, outgoing cat.  All my cats growing up were friendly and outgoing.  And he was a little bit scared when we visited with him, and my mom says he’s hiding.  But maybe I just need to spend more time with him and let him adjust.

Although, I’m half tempted to steal my other cat from home- Harry.  He’s this gorgeous, fluffy, black Maine Coon, about a year old now that I just love.  To death.

This is so hard picking a cat!  Because I can only get 1, and I’m going to have it for years and I want to make sure it’s the right one for me.

Of course I could easily fall in love with any cat!  Which makes it doubly hard!

I kind of have my heart set on a baby Maine Coon kitten.  And I’m looking at breeders even, except I can’t afford $500 for a kitten!  I could probably manage $200-250.  And I don’t need a champion kitten or anything.  I just want it to be healthy and cute.  And a good pet/friend.

My sweet Quilla was a purebred from a breeder and was only $200 because she didn’t have papers.  I’d love to find something like that again.

Even 2 of my favorite cats (well, they were all favorites really) Jake and Lucy were only 1/2 Maine Coon from this one lady and they were aweome, beautiful cats.

*Sigh*  I wish this was easier!

I certainly wish I could afford a purebred kitten.  Or that getting a kitten from a shelter was easier.  Or that I knew how to find those half-breeds and other kinds of options.

But maybe it turns out that Winston (or possibly Harry), is the kitty I end up bringing home with me.

See- isn’t Winston cute?

Why am I being so finicky??  I think I’m less finicky about the men I fuck!

And another 2 bite the dust

I just lost 2 more cats.

For anyone keeping tabs, that’s 4 since I started this blog. 4 in two years. Blah. That sucks.

My mom had to put down my 2 kitties Lucy and Smokey. Smokey was 17 and started to go downhill real fast. Lucy got sick very quickly this year as well and wasn’t getting better (she was about 11 or so). I’m mad at my mom for not warning me that she might be putting Lucy down.

She always does that. The few times we’ve had to put some animals down for being very old and very sick, she wouldn’t tell me until after. And I would always get mad. You think she’d learn by now!!

So that just leaves one cat- Eli (yes we named him after Eli Manning).

But we’ll probably hunt for a Mainecoon kitten this summer, so that makes me happy.

I’m gonna miss my Lucy and Smokey though :*(

This is Lucy sleeping 2 summers ago:

I <3 Kittens

Really, no matter how shitty I’m feeling or how bad a day I’m having, the sight of kittens always manages to bring me at the very least a few moments of cheer and warm fuzzies.
